In the '30s, between the districts of Monte Mario, Flaminio and the Prati was built the largest sports center in Rome and Italy: the Foro Italico.
Surrounded by greenery and connected to the other side of Rome from the Ponte Duca d'Aosta on the Tiber river, the Foro Italico can be considered in all respects an enormous work of art both for its beauty and for its monumentality.
The complex was designed during the fascist regime, as evidenced by the obelisk dedicated to Mussolini in Carrara marble and the large boulevard that leads to the sides of the main street engraved on huge marble blocks and floor mosaics depicting major sports .
On the sides of the obelisk stand the former Academy of Music (now IUSM) and the beautiful swimming pool decorated with numerous mosaics.
Later, the Foro has been repeatedly renovated and modernized and now the structures inside are the avanguard of italian architecture and the sports world, such as the new Central tennis stadium, which hosts the international tennis circuit ATP World Tour Masters 1000 (the most important tennis tournament in the world after the French Open), and numerous concerts of international importance.
Don't miss the Sphere Fountain (down the wide avenue), the Stadio dei Marmi, surrounded by 60 statues of athletes donated by Italian cities and, of course, the famous Olympic Stadium.
